This picture depicts men and women alike huddled in a police station, which at the time was probably a luxury to them. Where many may see living and sleeping in a police station as degrading and immoral to sleep next to convicts, this is the best option for the homeless at the time. These men and women have no other choice but to sleep on the cold streets of New York City. When thinking about this “Gilded Age”, many recall strong capitalists such as Rockefeller and Carnegie but in reality, if you are not reeling in millions of cash, you may be sleeping on the streets.
